Winning Fourth of July Ideas: A New Take On the Traditional Barbecue

by Paige Miles

July fourth is a time to create family memories that will last a lifetime. While backyard barbecues are fun, how about trying something different this year? Your children will love these new and exciting ways to celebrate the holiday, and you will appreciate that these ideas can be achieved without breaking the bank!

Enjoy the day poolside

Shouldn’t everyone be allowed to join in on the summer fun? Why should some have to slave over a hot grill or spend hours cooking? When it is too hot for the grill, beat the heat and plan something the entire family can enjoy while chilling at the pool.

Prepare a huge platter featuring a colorful display of black beans, avocado, cheese, tomatoes, cilantro, onions, and red, green, and yellow peppers over a bed of shredded lettuce. This can be dished into taco shells or dipped out with crisp tortilla chips and enjoyed as a flavorful finger food sure to please all. Add a tempting variety of fresh fruits and an icy drink for ultimate satisfaction.

Host a mid-day ice cream social

When the sun is hot and the numbers on the thermometer at their highest, invite all the friends and family over. It is a BYOIC (bring your own ice cream) event. You provide the toppings and make sure you have a good variety available.

Syrups, caramel, nuts, fruit, marshmallows, cookie pieces, candy bar bits, and perhaps even a plate of brownies will tempt the most finicky eater and put a smile on the little one’s faces. Who says you can’t have dessert for dinner?

Create memories next to an open flame

How long has it been since you have enjoyed a real flame-kissed hot dog or the ooey gooey goodness of a roasted marshmallow, fresh from the open fire? Take this experience a bit further and try roasting brats and red peppers, or make a whole meal and roast potatoes and corn on the cob by wrapping them in foil and tucking them under hot coals.

Put on a pie eating contest

Nothing is more American or represents July 4th better than hot dogs, hamburgers, baseball, and apple pie. Host your backyard barbecue, get your game on, and then serve up the pie in a contest! The kids will be delighted, the adults slightly less so, but it will be the highlight of the day for all. Tip: You could also use hot dogs or watermelon for this contest.

Picnic at the park

Pack a lunch, you are going out for the day! If your children are still young, chances are they will be thrilled with the idea of spending the day outdoors near a playground. And you and hubby can spend some quality one-on-one time chatting or enjoying a round of tennis while they play nearby.

What to bring? Keep it simple. Pack a cooler with sandwich fixings and bring plenty of chopped veggies. Slide fruit slices onto wooden skewers for a cool finger food, and add some crunch with a bag of your favorite potato chips. Make sure to bring lots of water packed in ice, particularly if it is a warm day.

Wrap up the day with a rendezvous under the stars

Whether you are attending a local fireworks show or creating one of your own, this is the perfect end to any fourth of July. While the children are staring awe-stricken at the colorful display in the sky, you and your husband can cuddle together on a blanket and enjoy a romantic moment after a busy fun-filled day.
